Custom vs. off-the-shelf, and caring for your mouthguard
An off-the-shelf guard has a generic shape, so the fit is often poor. A custom one is molded from an impression or scan of your own teeth. Which one suits your sport is a question for your coach and the doctor together. We don’t claim a mouthguard fully prevents injury — it reduces the risk, but doesn’t remove it.
Rinse the guard in cool water after training, keep it in its case, and don’t leave it in the sun, in hot water, or in a car. It wears out or changes shape over time. If your bite has changed (after dental treatment, a crown, or braces, for example) or the guard feels wrong, show it to the doctor — you may need a new one. There are contraindications; a consultation with a specialist is required.
